Vijay Murtikar’s Painting Master Class in Naggar

On June 19, during his exhibition in the IRMT the Benares-based artist and stone carver Vijay Murtikar held a 1-hour long master class for the students of the Helena Roerich Academy of Arts for Children, IRMT, Naggar.

He set himself a rather modest but extremely important task of teaching the Academy students, particularly the youngest among them, the basics of drawing. He started with lines and circles and demonstrated how easily they can evolve into uncomplicated forms like birds and flowers. He taught the students how to draw thin and thick lines. He also stressed the importance of still life painting, especially of the simple objects like pots, for learning the basics of chiaroscuro.

To the students’ delight he finished his master class with the much expected demonstration of how to draw a stylized Ganesha in less than 30 seconds.
