"Beyond the Frame." An Exhibition of Photographs by Amit Makwana (Gujarat)

As the monsoon season draws to a close, exhibitions are once again opening at the International Roerich Memorial Trust (IRMT). On September 15, the IRMT Exhibition Hall opened its doors to the works of Amit Makwana, a renowned photographer from Gujarat. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions and three solo shows, and his work has been repeatedly recognized with prestigious awards. The opportunity to organize this exhibition at the memorial Estate of the Russian artist Nicholas Roerich was provided to Amit Makwana by the Gujarat State Lalit Kala Akademi.

Since childhood, Amit Makwana dreamed of becoming a photographer, but his journey toward this dream was neither quick nor easy. Financial difficulties prevented him from buying a camera for a long time—and without one, how could there be photographs? Yet, Amit Makwana did not give up; he worked tirelessly and kept moving toward his cherished goal. In 2010, fortune smiled upon him when he received a priceless gift: a Nikon D-40 camera. From that moment on, he began to bring all his accumulated ideas and visions to life, turning them into vibrant, breathing frames infused with love and light.

Amit’s photographs capture the beauty of the people, nature, and cultural traditions of his native state of Gujarat, as well as picturesque scenes from daily life in Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh. Here, one can see elegantly dressed women gathered by a well to draw water and share the latest news. One can admire inspired dancers and share in the pure joy of children. Or, looking into the wise face of an elderly woman, one might ponder the life trials she had to overcome—those that remained beyond the frame…

The guests of honor at the exhibition were the Russian and Indian curators of the IRMT, Larisa Surgina and Suresh Kumar. Together with colleagues and visitors, they wished Amit Makwana continued success and inspiration on his creative journey.
