Impressions of the Hills

On June 4, 2018, the week-long solo exhibition of the renowned artist from Chandigarh Prof. Sadhna Sangar, Principal, Government College, Derabassi, Mohali, Punjab, and President of “We,” the group of contemporary Indian women artists, opened in the Himalayan Roerich Estate in Naggar. Mrs. Larisa Surgina, the Russian Curator of the International Roerich Memorial Trust (IRMT), Naggar, and the employee of the International Centre of the Roerichs, Moscow, was the Guest of Honour of the opening ceremony. 

Prof. Sangar displayed 15 of her latest acrylic works on canvas created specially for the exhibition in the IRMT. These are mostly mountain landscapes reflecting the artist’s impressions of the Himalayas, including the storied Valley of Flowers abloom in the months of June and July framed by the mountain ranges partly obscured by pre-monsoon haze. A wonderful impression of a blossoming apple tree completed the flavour of the spring season in the hills.

In several of the displayed works the artist developed one of her favourite themes: birds – ever alert and lively, and symbolizing the freedom, courage and indefatigability of woman’s soul – in natural surroundings, this time in magnificent and colourful spring season. “My birds are alone but not lonely: one can’t feel lonely being surrounded by such a stunningly beautiful nature,” says Prof. Sangar commenting on her works. With her palette dominated by the shades of purple and blue, Prof. Sangar also exhibited several impressions and views from her studio in Chandigarh, the city she lives and works in.
